SmartServo

Another truly innovative product from R3 Scientific, SmartServo is an intelligent self-adapting actuator that has features unavailable from any other servos on the market in its price range.

SmartServo was designed for use by R3’s own vertical takeoff and landing vehicle, SkyBot. When working on SkyBot’s design, R3's team realized that the servo actuators currently available on the market were either lacking power and functionality, or are too heavy and expensive, so the Company’s engineers did what they do best – designed a unique and innovative product to meet these requirements.

The result is truly amazing – SmartServo has a set of features only found in high-end military grade servo actuators costing well over $1,500, all built into a package that weighs less than ¾ lbs and costs less than $500.

SmartServo allows product designers to avoid costly feedback and protection circuits, build intelligent motion systems that adapt to changing conditions, and to replace unreliable and noisy servos built with brush motors.

SmartServo actuators can communicate with control systems using PWM or R3232 interface, as well as high-speed redundant CAN-compliant data bus, in which case a single bus can support up to 16 SmartServos.

From industrial automation to ground and aerial robots, SmartServo can provide an affordable solution to challenging design and engineering problems at a fraction of a cost of competitive products.

SmartServo has the following features:

  • Outside dimensions and mounting hole patterns equivalent to popular Seiko PS-050 servo actuator
  • Brushless motor eliminates electromagnetic interference, overheating and noise
  • Use of brushless motor and digital electronics dramatically improves reliability and extends life of the actuator to over 10,000 hours
  • Actuator adapts to the load and prevents overshoot, wobbling and jitter found in regular servos using proprietary Dynamic Adaptive Interaction algorithm
  • User-configurable speed, torque, travel, stall recovery and other options
  • CAN, PWM, or RS232 data communication ports
  • Up to 50W power at 12 or 28 VDC
  • 0.75 lbs (340 g) weight * Up to 7 Nm (990 oz.in.) torque and 0.21 s @ 60 deg speed
  • 180 degree turn
  • Conforms to MIL-T-28800 environmental specifications
  • Data output includes position, current, voltage, temperature and speed at up to 300 Hz rate
